SHS Mask Flexible Letter

December 7, 2021

Dear Scituate Public School Family,

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has given school districts the ability to unmask their students and staff by school building once the school building reaches an 80% vaccination rate.

Scituate Public Schools monitors the vaccination status at each school building. Once a school reaches 80%, the school district is required to file an attestation form with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).  DESE has recently approved our High School attestation application and the Scituate School Committee voted at their December 6, 2021 meeting to update the “Face Covering” policy to a mask flexible policy.  This allows the Superintendent the flexibility to adapt the masking requirement at the building level after considering information from multiple sources including but not limited to the SPS Medical Advisory Committee and the Scituate Board of Health.

Effective Wednesday, December 15, 2021, Scituate High School will be “mask flexible.”  This means that fully vaccinated students and staff will have the ability to unmask while indoors.  Unvaccinated students and staff are required to continue wearing masks while indoors.  Specific details will be forthcoming from Dr. Maguire to our high school community.

We will continue to monitor vaccination rates at the elementary schools and Gates Middle School.  We will advise each school community when the 80% threshold is near.  Any changes will be communicated in advance.
