It is the belief of the Foreign Language Department that, in order to function effectively in a global society, all Americans should be able to communicate in a language other than English. To realize this end, the department offers a curriculum designed to fit the needs of each student from ninth grade through twelfth grade. With the recommendation of Foreign Language teachers and school counselors, students may select from the following programs in French, Latin and Spanish: Advanced Placement, honors (beginning in second year), college preparatory as well as Gateway to Spanish at the basic level. All graduates of Scituate High School must have successfully completed at least two years of the same language.
The Foreign Language Department has two principal goals:
-
To develop in students the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening a language other than English to the extent where they can perform at least basic tasks in a native situation.
-
To develop in each student an appreciation of and sensitivity to the cultures of the people who speak this language.
To help students not only meet the Foreign Language minimum requirement, but also to achieve optimum proficiency, the Department offers the following auxiliary programs:
-
Native guest speakers in individual classrooms
-
Amity scholars who spend a year in high school classrooms as native-speaking interns
-
Foreign Language National Exams
-
National Foreign Language Honor Society Membership
-
Biennial exchanges with France and Spain
-
Biennial ancient civilization seminar and trip to Italy
-
Fully equipped Language Laboratory which students attend once a cycle
-
International Club and Latin Club
-
Museum, theater, and restaurant excursions
