Department Philosophy: The district’s overarching philosophy toward physical education is for students to experience and understand the short-term and long-term benefits of a physical activity to motivate them to be lifelong movers. Complementary to this philosophy is our fundamental departmental belief that a strong physical education program must promote inclusion, appropriately challenge students physically and mentally and embrace problem solving through cooperation and teamwork. The basis of this belief comes from our K-12 Project Adventure curriculum. In the elementary grades, these values are accomplished through manipulative (throwing, catching, sticking, etc), locomotor (running, skipping, hopping, etc) and non-locomotor (twisting, balancing, extending, etc) skills developed as an individual and in cooperative groups. At Gates and as freshmen and sophomores in high school, a student’s physical education experience will include progressive cooperative group challenges, lifelong wellness activities, a hands-on personal fitness experience and various traditional and non-traditional team sports. In grades 11 and 12, students are allowed to select their own focused physical education elective which, depending on the elective selected, could include the use of our climbing wall.
