A Scituate Host Family

A host family is a local family that provides support to a Boston METCO student while they are attending school in town.  Support ranges from allowing an occasional afternoon visit at your home, to attending a school function on behalf of the Boston student.   METCO students spend approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes in daily travel to and from Scituate.  Students wanting to participate in after school activities must sometimes forgo these opportunities for increased socialization if they do not have host families.  The level of commitment can be determined between the Scituate and the Boston families.  Co-hosting with another Scituate family is another way to participate in the program.  All hosting relationships must be updated annually so that the Scituate METCO office can provide continued support to all participants.

Qualitative data indicates that a wholesome host family partnership greatly increases the chance of social and academic success for Boston students.  In many cases, lifelong bonds are formed between the host family and the student that carry over from their school days into their personal and/or business lives. The benefits to the host family include an increased awareness and acceptance of cultural and social diversity.

Host families provide a safe space beyond the doors of the schoolhouse for Boston students during the school year.  If you are interested in participating, please request a formal application from the Scituate METCO Program office.

SCITUATE METCO HOST FAMILY
IDEAS TO SUPPORT OUR ELEMENTARY BOSTON STUDENTS

Afternoon and evening events: Invite students to stay afternoon and meet parents at school in evening.  Many times parents cannot meet the bus in Boston and make it down to Scituate for a conference or event.  Also students would then make two round trips in one day. Some of these events are:

  • Back To School/Open House Night
  • Fall  & Spring Parent Conferences
  • Winter and Spring Concerts
  • Book Fair Parents Night
  • Spring for the Arts

Other Hosting Opportunities Possibilities:

Weekend events: Events such as the PTO Holiday Fairs or Spring Fairs are opportunities to have your student stay over Friday night and parents come down to the fair on Saturday.

Special school projects are an opportunity to work together especially if it would be difficult to bring the project (such as Fourth Grade Pumpkin Project) on the bus.  After school programs at each building are also a great enrichment opportunity.

Birthdays: Contact your host family to assist in getting birthday snack (safely) to school! Especially if the student wanted to do an ice cream treat!

The Town of Scituate is also known for other wonderful opportunities and events that our Boston students hear about each year but without your help don’t get the experience. Events such as: Heritage Days, Labor Day Parade, Spring for the Arts.  Simple everyday experiences are also enriching such as the beach, the harbor, and just playing in the neighborhood!
