This one semester course will examine the theoretical and practical study of the American Economic System. Current trends in our free enterprise system will be stressed. The course will cover such topics as: the pillars of American capitalism; supply and demand; the determination of price; how different industries compete; the stock market; and the role of labor and government. Students will be involved in a stock market simulation. The student is expected to take part in class discussions, respond to guest speakers and complete related independent assignments.
Business Law is presented in such a way as to be of personal value to the student in the business-consumer world. The student learns the nature of business law through analyzing the relationships among contract law, law of sales and consumer law. Subject matter covered includes civil, criminal, business and domestic law issues. Guest speakers and a field trip to a court or jail will augment class discussions. Grading will be in the form of tests, quizzes, oral presentations, research projects and class participation.
Students in the marketing class actively run the SHS school store including designing new products and SHS apparel, selecting, sourcing and pricing new food items for the store, stocking, managing inventory, designing a website that relates to the store, accounting, scheduling, and controls. They will design the advertising pieces and TV ads (local Scituate channel) necessary for growing the business and increasing profitability. Students will learn valuable graphic design skills in Microsoft Word and Publisher as they create brochures and direct mail items for The Shipyard and other businesses in the community. Students will also learn other marketing skills as they design market research surveys and study Harvard Business Case Studies.
This new course will give students and opportunity to explore careers in
greater detail which they may be interested in someday pursuing. The
curriculum will cover job hunting, preparing a resume, interviewing and what
is expected from a responsible employee. The internship will provide
hands on experience where the students can observe and participate in an
approved work environment in the community. Students will be
responsible for their own transportation to and from their internship.
